Stick You Back Together With Paper & Glue.

Updated: Aug 24

A call out for artists and creative types

I am embarking on a creative and therapeutic exploration of art, identity and recovery. I am looking for stories from artists to help me help others. A story about the power of art in recovery and a sense of self in the world.

I'm a Therapist & Artist

that works with stories.

I made my first community magazine at 11 years old. My youth was immersed in making art, street art and illustration. I made a good living as a magazine illustrator and as an artist for several independent music labels both here and abroad.

On January 26th, 2002, that life ended.

I woke from a coma, no longer able to draw or paint. My memories and language fractured. I sunk into identity and existential crisis. From there I spiralled into a vacuum of black places.

Today, I create human libraries of David versus Goliath, Rocky of the ropes come-back stories. Stories of resilience and overcoming. I develop psychological guides from the learning found in real human recovery stories. Guides to help people change their lives. My theme is Loss and Overcoming. My projects are about passing inspiration and learning from one person with experience to another experiencing. Art & creativity are powerful ways to do this.

What is Paper & Glue?

I am not sure yet is the most honest answer. There will be a book. I love making books & journals. Dependent on sponsorship and funding, it will also be an exhibition, maybe a magazine. It will involve some podcasts, some public talks for those willing. It will become what it is as we work together.

I work from a co-production perspective. One where you get to shape the project, decide and contribute ideas. This is not a passive storytelling project. Quite the opposite. It is a project you can shape with me as much or as little as you like. Paper & Glue products will be available to the public but also marketed into the Third Sector Community and Statutory services. I hope it will encourage these organisations to consider working with and funding artists more.

The Exhibition

I would like artists to contribute to both publications and exhibition. The exhibition itself will feature art, stories & optional public speaking. There has to be some music. There has to be tea and cake.

What Kind of Artists?

The quick answer is any. Regardless of your background, medium, qualifications or not, you are welcome to take part. Photographers, artists, digital design, writers, storytellers, illustrators, actors, poets… To me, the label is less relevant than your story and the power of creative expression.

What kind of stories?

There are two perspectives to the stories I am collecting.

  1. The role of creativity in your own mental health, wellbeing & recovery.

  2. Your experience of using art to help others living through tough times.
